HOLY WEEK WORSHIP AT CALVARY
Maundy Thursday Service
April 1 - 7:30 p.m. Worship
With nightfall our Lenten observance comes to an end, and we
gather with Christians around the world to begin
the Three Days during which we participate once again in the saving
power of Jesus' passing over from death to
life. At the heart of the Maundy Thursday liturgy is Jesus'
commandment to love one another. As Jesus washed
the feet of his disciples, we are called to follow his example as we
humbly care for one another, especially the
poor and the unloved. At the Lord's Table we remember Jesus'
sacrifice of his life, even as we are called to offer
ourselves in love for the life of the world.
Good Friday Tenebrae Worship
April 2 - 7:30 p.m.
Come join us. Tenebrae means "darkness." We will sing meditative
songs, and watch the sanctuary grow darker
as the moment of our Lord's death is announced.
Saturday Easter Vigil
April 3 - 8 p.m.
Next to the Sunday service, the Easter Vigil is the oldest
Christian liturgy. There are four parts to this service,
which take us from the darkness of Good Friday and the tomb to the
light of the resurrection. It begins outside
where a bonfire is started and the paschal candle is lit. Following
a procession into the darkened sanctuary, we
listen to a number of readings from Scripture that recount God’s
plan for the world and its salvation, beginning
with Creation. During the third part of the Vigil, the congregation
is invited to renew their baptismal vows.
Then there is a dramatic change as the last part begins. The organ
is played, the candles are lit, and the lights are
fully turned on. For the first time since Lent began, "Alleluia" is
on our lips. The Easter Gospel is read, and we
celebrate the first Communion of Easter.
Easter Sunday
April 4, 9:00 and 10:30 am
We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord with songs of praise
and thanksgiving for His great gift of love and for
our salvation. (There is NO Sunday School on Easter Sunday)
